4th Grade Would Like to Hear Your Family's Immigration Stories

To explore the theme Where We Are in Place and Time, 4th grade examines the reasons people migrate. They specifically look into where people migrate from and where they choose to go and why. They also study the effect that migration has on a community, as well as the effect on the immigrants.

To begin this inquiry they would love to hear YOUR stories. Over the course of time most people have migrated to the United States from another place. Please share your family's migration story with us. Where did you family come from and when? What factors did they consider when they chose a new place to live? How did the journey and the location they chose affect them? Tell us in the comments!

Thanks so much for helping support our inquiry!

My father's side of our family is Cherokee Indian. When I asked my father the history of his family he said,"Sis, all of my family is tied into the Cherokee nation and early pioneers." My father's father, my grandfather, is half Cherokee. My grandmother's side of the family came from Ireland and also has Cherokee lines. My Irish family came to America looking for a better life. My mother's family is from Ireland and Scotland. They also came looking for a better life. My husband's family is all from Ireland and Scotland. His name use to be McReady. They dropped the Mc as many Irish immigrants did and used Ready. It is interesting that my mom's maiden name is McFerrin. They chose to keep the Mc with their name though.
I am proud of my American heritage and especially of the American Indian bloodline in my family.

My paternal grandmother "escaped" from Ukraine along with her parents and two brothers. They left in 1921 during the Bolshevik Revolution. My paternal grandfather is from Russia, but I do not know the story.

My maternal grandparents were born in Scotland. They came to America when my grandmother and her brother were children. They came for better opportunities.

My great grandmother came on a ship from Lebanon when she was 9 years old. Her family migrated to the U.S.A to find freedom for women and religion.

My family migrated from Germany in the early 1900's at the age of 21. They wanted to provide a better life in the new world for the family they were planning to have.

My father came from Peru for the college education opportunities available in the US. My Grandfather on my mother's side came from Cuba and was able to come over legally before relations with the Cuban government got bad. His family had the foresight (and financial ability) to come over early.

In the 1890s, my grandmother's grandparents came to New Orleans from Sicily. Apparently many Italian-speakers entered the US through Louisiana vs. New York. Because of discrimination against Italians and Catholics in N. Texas (where they settled in Fort Worth), they immediately stopped speaking Italian and tried to become as "American" as possible. The rest of my ancestors are from Wales or England. One came to the colony of Virginia in the early 1700s as an indentured servant to Robert E. Lee's grandfather. He contracted to cook for 4 years on the plantation, but the Lees refused to release him from his bond, so he became the first man in the colonies to successfully sue for his freedom from indenture. All my family on both sides always lived in the south; my husband's have always lived in the north.
