What is Beauty?

Third grade is beginning a PYP unit of inquiry under How We Express Ourselves, regarding beauty in the arts. The central idea is: Through the arts people learn to appreciate the many faces of beauty.
As a provocation for this exploration students are bringing in art objects from home and sharing their criteria for why they think it is beautiful. They will then share with classmates, and then with other classes and teachers.
In order to enhance and expand our students' understanding of beauty and the our unique interpretations and perspective on it, we want to hear from others at Spicewood, in our community, and around the world.
We would like for you to share what you think beauty is. In the comments can you tell us what your criteria for beauty is-what makes something beautiful to you?
We appreciate your contributions and look forward to learning from you!

I think that deciding on what is beautiful and why is hard since I understand that beauty can be assessed as something subjective, more like a perception.... What can be beautiful for me might not be for others. For me personally, beauty is found in nature, in sunsets, dusks, flowers, colours, miracles of life, animals, and of course how people are created, born, relate and learn!
If we really analize the concept of beauty we can maybe think of it as "there is no absolute beauty in reality as things are as beautiful as we perceive them"

beauty lies on the eye of the beholder ;-)

Something is beautiful if it makes you smile. =)

It is beautiful when a child's eyes light up when they see you and when you feel just as happy to see them.

Beauty for me is taking the time to appreciate truly what is too often taken for granted like family and health.

To me beauty comes in a million different forms. I find faces beautiful, and trees, all the different varieties of animals and plants. I feel like I'm surrounded by beautiful things - oh, and especially rainbows! But even unnatural things can be beautiful. Sparkling Christmas trees, colorful candies, and really good stories. I especially love and value the arts. I love to see different ideas of beauty represented through art, music, and dance. I wish I could do that.

Life is full of beauty. Notice it. Notice the bumble bee, the small child, and the smiling faces. Smell the rain, and feel the wind, look around and enjoy what you see.

A lovely day, bright colors on a white canvas, a person showing empathy to another person, people who stop to say hello or smile at me when I don't expect it (just because they want to), a thoughtful poem or book, the kind of people that make you feel good just to spend a moment in their company. I notice beautiful things everyday but I do not have a 'definition' of what beauty is. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I feel that it is based on ones perspective. My perspective of beauty is when I notice something that takes my breath away.

Beauty to me is all in perception of an experience or feeling. I believe that is why each of us are created differently. What is beautiful to some may not be to others. Whatever makes you happy could easily be described as beautiful.

There are two types of beauty. The first is physical beauty which is manifest on earth as lands, seas, flowers, trees, mountains, etc. The second type of beauty is spiritual beauty which is manifest in the spirit of man. Spiritual beauty is felt and shown through kindness, compassion, thoughtfulness, generosity, and love. Spiritual beauty is also referred to as inner beauty.

you can only see it on the outside when you feel it on the inside.

Beauty is a moment when you realize that you need to impress the details into your memory. Like watching my Kindergartner reading Cat in the Hat, working through each word one letter at a time. Listening to all of those machinations going through her mind was precious. It won't be long before she'll recognize the words by sight. This moment is beautiful and fleeting.
